Use your senses when choosing ceramics!
Ceramics is a wonderful material that has accompanied us from ancient times to the present day. Whether you are buying a coffee mug for your morning coffee, a bowl for fruits or an original decoration for your flat, it is good to know how to recognize whether a product is truly high-quality and will serve you for many years.
Touch the product – Surface and glaze
High-quality ceramics have a smooth and even surface without any cracks, bubbles or sharp edges. The glaze should be applied consistently, without “patches” or chips. If you notice a fine hairline crack (so-called craquelure), it does not have to be bad for decorative ceramics, but for functional ceramics (like cups or plates) it is undesirable – moisture and bacteria could penetrate the cracks.
Listen – Sound test
If you lightly tap the ceramics (with your fingernail or a teaspoon), it should sound clear and “pure”. Hollow or muffled sound could signal that the material was poorly fired or that it has cracks inside.
Look – Size and firmness
Functional ceramics should have an appropriate wall thickness – not too thin (it can break easily) or too bulky (difficult to handle). It should be sturdy and balanced when you take it in hand.
Think – Function, durability and originality
The cup should have a comfortable handle that is easy to hold. The bowl should have a stable base to avoid tipping. Functional ceramics should be suitable for dishwashers and microwaves (if it is designated as such by its creator). It is important for products to withstand temperature changes – or it could break when in contact with hot water. Always ask the creator or the seller for recommended use. High-quality ceramics are often handmade – you can see it instantly – no two pieces are exactly the same. Little imperfections are not defects but a proof of handmade work and originality.
Origin and brand
Ask who made the ceramic piece. Honest creators are proud of their work, they often mark it (with signature, logo, or stamp on the bottom). If you buy ceramics at the markets or directly from a studio, you can be sure about its origin and production process. However, the greatest value of ceramics comes from the fact that it is made with love, patience and craftsmanship. And precisely because of this an ordinary mug can become a favourite item that will accompany you every day.
